Crowd control barriers act as a physical and psychological barrier, used to demarcate “no access” zones and to designate spaces for lines. They are also used by riot police to control large gatherings.
Crowd control barriers are usually made of steel, although lighter weight plastic variants are sometimes used. Barriers are most effective when they interlock, attached to each other in a straight line via hooks on the side of each obstacle. Once the barrier is locked, security personnel can create impenetrable lines, because such barriers cannot be easily toppled.
These self-supporting crowd control barriers are built to last: constructed from high-strength steel, all barrier components are hot-dip galvanized to provide strong and durable corrosion resistance. Characteristic:
International standard barrier lengths are 1 meter, 2 meters and 2.5 meters. The standard height (for optimal safety and visibility) of a barrier is 43 inches (about 109 cm). An 8-foot obstacle weighs about 55 pounds (25 kg).
To prevent damage, standard barriers are made of 16 gauge steel pipe, measuring 1.5 inches on the outside diameter. Quality barricades are also hot-dip galvanized after fabrication, allowing the barriers to be placed and even stored outside without the risk of rust.
Automatic door barrier system
Some obstacles are manufactured with bases welded to the fence; others have pop-up facilities. The latter are advantageous because they are replaceable (a new base can be inserted, so damage to one base does not render the rest of the barrier unusable). There are four main types of interchangeable bases: flat bases, bridge bases, U bases, and wheel bases, all of which offer advantages in different situations.
Crowd control barriers are sometimes placed next to each other without being attached, but they are most effective when they are joined together. Without a solid interlock, barriers can be removed by individuals in the crowd, compromising the integrity of a line. The most popular hook style is the “classic” style in which the men's hooks are spaced 15 inches apart. The second most popular, the “wide hook” style, has male hooks 25 inches apart.
